I can apply for president of the US now

As I will no longer be able to respond "25-34" when asked what age group I belong to as I fill out another useless web form, I feel compelled to scour my multiple sources of collected quotes in hopes of finding some solace.

"You can judge your age by the amount of pain you feel when you come in contact with a new idea." - Pearl S. Buck (Considering my 25-year-old brother seems much more shocked with what he sees around him now that he is also living in Spain, I guess this would make me younger than he is, in a way.)

"People like you and I, though mortal of course like everyone else, do not grow old no matter how long we live...[We] never cease to stand like curious children before the great mystery into which we were born." - Albert Einstein, in a letter to Otto Juliusburger (Einstein was a cool dude, a hippy before there were hippies, and I've long believed a sense of permanent wonder is necessary to prevent our souls from shrivelling... Hmm... would living in wonder mean I actually get points in favor in the "pain scale" in the previous quote?)

"Live as if your were to die tomorrow, but learn as if you were to live forever."- Gandhi (Nice way to balance out the "nothing is important, everything is important" dilemma.)

"Though an old man I am but a young gardener." - Thomas Jefferson (I'd forgotten about this one, but I think it's pretty cool. I don't know if I'll ever get into gardening, but the idea of picking up new hobbies at every age is an appealing one.)

"There are three ingredients in the good life: learning, earning and yearning." - Christopher Morley (Some people find the efforts the English-speaking world puts into--or used to put into, at least--making their poetry rhyme amusing, but I dare any Spanish speaker to translate this as effectively.)

"And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count; it's the life in your years." - Abraham Lincoln (Was he really a republican?)

- Madeleine L'Engle

"The great thing about getting older is that you don't lose all the other ages you've been." - Madeleine L'Engle

"Hacerse viejo es obligatorio; crecer es opcional." - ¿?

"Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional." - ?

- Billie Burke

"Age is something that doesn't matter, unless you are a cheese." - Billie Burke

"Old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternative." - Maurice Chevalier (OK, I'm not feeling that old! Just a brief reminder that we're still alive.)

Finally, some thoughts on being here now. Those who know me since my first emails were sent (ca. 1992) may recall that for many years my signature included an altered snippet of John Lennon's song to his son, "Beautiful Boy": (It also included this cheesy ASCII-Art guitar):

A more pleasant-sounding variation on that theme is "Our eternal home is the present moment", something I heard someone say while only seeing their tongue peek out from behind a canvas through a small hole ripped through it a few minutes earlier. (One of the better displays of performance art I've seen, actually.)

To wrap things up, I was organizing files on my PC not too long ago, and I found a small file that only had the following text in it:

The shadow by my finger cast
Divides the future from the past.
Behind its unreturning line,
The vanished hour, no longer thine.

Before it lies the unknown hour,
In darkness and beyond thine power.
One hour alone is in thine hands,
The now on which the shadow stands.

-- Poem inscribed on a sundial at Wellesley College

OK, ya me siento un poco mejor.

OK, I feel a little better now.

Concerning the number "35"

From Wikipedia:

It is the sum of the first five triangular numbers, making it a tetrahedral number. It is also a centered cube number. 35 is a pentagonal number and a pentatope number.

There are 35 hexominos, the polyominos made from 6 squares.

35 is a highly cototient number, since there are more solutions to the equation x - φ(x) = 35 than there are for any other integers below it except 1.

So there.

Si no olvido...

According to Cerati's official website, his new album, Ahí Vamos, went on sale on April 4th, although I don't know if that would be just in Argentina or other places, too. We'll keep an eye open. Until now, I've only been able to listen to the first single, "Crimen" ("Crime"). The lyrics and melody are at the level Cerati has gotten us used to, although the structure and production seem less ambitious.

My quick translation:
The wait has left me exhausted
I haven't heard from you
You left so much in me
In flames I went to bed
In a plodding degradation (?)
I realized I'd lost you

What else can I do?
If I don't forget (you)... I will die

And another crime will remain... unresolved

If you want to listen to it, I suppose you could look for it on the web. If you don't want to look for it, see if this works: Crimen.mp3.

2006 is looking good (musically, at least...)

This week sees the release of new albums from Morrissey, Ringleader of the Tormetors, and The Flaming Lips, At War With the Mystics. Both Morrissey and the Lips are veterans of the scene, and their last outputs were pretty good (Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots has to be one of my Top 10 albums of all time.) I haven't listened to any of these new albums yet, but I hope to do so soon. I believe this month will also see the release of a new album from The Secret Machines, and not too long after that we should be getting new stuff from Kula Shaker (YES!! After 7 years or so... let's cross our fingers and hope it's not as bad as the last Jeevas record), Charlatans, Gomez, Zoé, Cerati, Muse, Nouvelle Vague, Snow Patrol, The Open and Radiohead. (Maybe even Franz Ferdinand will surprise us with new stuff before the year is over.) This keeps our hopes up that 2006 may, in fact, be a good year, as far as music is concerned... because in most other aspects, it seems to still be going backwards.
