Evil Urges

I remember getting my hands on It Still Moves, My Morning Jacket's album from 2003, when I worked at Houghton Mifflin, but not how or who I got it from. I'm listening to every track on that record now and none of them seem remotely familiar, with the exception, maybe, of some parts of "Golden". I remember seeing them open for Wilco in May of 2005 in Boston, and I remember them releasing Z later that year, to much critical acclaim; some magazine even called them the "American Radiohead". So I got it, listened to it once, wasn't too impressed, and never listened to it again. So, of course, I was somewhat skeptical when I read two or three rave review over their performance at this year's SXSW festival, but it was just enough to spark my curiosity and make me hunt down Evil Urges (out June 10) right before I left for Spain in early May.

Well, I won't peg them with the "American Radiohead" moniker just yet, but I have to admit the album's opening is very reminiscent of Radiohead's The Bends (1995), and the fact that this album is not easily categorized does kind of put them in the same league. They easily mix the alt-country they're known for with funk, falsettos, dance rhythms and classic rock--sometimes in the same song. I'd like to write more, but am short of time at the moment, so I'll just say I've liked it so much it's almost become the soundtrack of this trip for me (along with MGMT's Oracular Spectacular when I'm happier), and am taking this time off to write these two paragraphs, when I should probably be doing other things that are more urgent...
