Album Commentary: Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

Tengo pendiente esta reseña desde hace buen tiempo ya. Cuando salió a principios de marzo, era definitivamente uno de los discos más anticipados de este año, después de que alabanzas universales cobijaran Funeral, el CD con el que debutaron en 2004. Los segundos discos siempre se usan para medir el "verdadero talento" de las bandas con debúts exitosos, y Neon Bible ha venido a demostrar que Funeral no fue ningún accidente. Aunque me tomó dos o tres semanas el comenzar a apreciarlo realmente, se ha vuelto fácilmente en mi disco favorito en lo que va del año--y esto en la primer mitad de un año que ya ha visto muchos discos mejores que todos los del 2006 juntos. Joder, si hasta he pagado dos veces (una vez on-line, luego por el CD) por al menos tres discos este año ya. Pero ese será el tópico de otra nota. | This review has been long in the coming. Released in early March, it was ceratainly one of the most anticipated releases of this year, after universal praise blanketed Funeral, their debut CD from 2004. Sophomore releases are always used to gauge the "true talent" of bands with succesful debuts, and Neon Bible has come to show Funeral was no accident. Although it took me two or three weeks to warm up to it, it has easily become my favorite record released this year so far--and the first half of this year has already seen the release of many more better albums than the full of 2006 did. Shit, I've actually payed twice (once on-line, then again for the disc) for at least three records this year already. But that'll be the topic of another entry. | |||
| ¿Por dónde comenzar? ¿Digo solamente que no recuerdo haber visto nunca antes tantas evaluaciones de cinco estrellas para un disco, la Q de abril yendo tan lejos como llamarlo "el disco del año" (¡en el primer trimestre!)? ¿O que la tira de cómic "Hit Emocional" de la Rockdelux de abril--que usualmente trata de alguna canción de décadas atrás y cómo influyó en la vida del caricaturista--por primera vez fue de una canción recién salidita de la fábrica? ¿O simplemente repito lo que escribí cuando hice mi reseña de Funeral: desde los días de James no escuchaba música tan catártica? Porque este ha resultado ser uno de esos discos que puedo escuchar una y otra vez y seguirme emocionano con él cada vez. Siempre he dicho que soy alguien a quien le atrae más la música que la letra de una canción, pero hay un factor que no es ni letra ni música que suelo olvidar: la emoción, y es probablemente lo que más me atrae a una canción. Hay un mundo de diferencia entre escuchar a alguien con una voz bonita alcanzar las notas correctas, y olvidarse de uno mismo para convertirse en la persona detrás de los altavoces. | Where to begin? Should I just say that I don't remember ever seeing a CD released to so many 5-star reviews, April's Q even going as far as naming it "record of the year" (in the first quarter!)? Or that the "Hit Emocional" comic strip in April's Rockdelux--which usually deals with a song from decades past and the impact it had in the cartoonist's life--for the first time was about a song on a CD fresh out of the factory? Or should I just repeat what I said when I reviewed Funeral: not since the days of James had I heard music that was this cathartic? Because this is a record I can listen to once and again and still get excited about it. I've always said I am more a "melody person" than a "lyrics person", but there's a factor that's not related to music or words I keep forgetting: "emotion", and it's probably what pulls me in the most into a song. There's a world of difference between listening to someone with a nice voice hit the right notes, and forgetting who you are to become the person behind the speakers. | |||
| Como dije antes, este no fue uno de esos discos que me atrapó a primera escucha. Una cosa que no podía entender era por qué el sonido estaba tan opaco, como si no se hubiera hecho gran esfuerzo a la hora de producir y mezclar el disco. E incluso ahora me pregunto si el disco se sentiría diferente si el sonido fuera más brillante, pero quizás este era el sonido que estaban buscando, uno que no fuera muy pulido, obligando a las canciones a valerse únicamente de las composiciones mismas. Quizás Arcade Fire está en ese lugar cómodo en el que son lo suficientemente maduros para saber lo que deben hacer pero aún son lo suficientemente jóvenes para no importarles. Está claro que han madurado desde Funeral, mostrando arreglos mucho más ricos y yendo tras temas de más peso, pero aún tienen la ingenuidad necesaria para cantar como adolescentes despreocupados en "Black Wave" o decir cosas como "Conozco un lugar / al que no llega ningún coche". | As I said before, this wasn't one of those records that pulled me in the first time I listened to it. One thing I couldn't wrap my head around was why it sounded somewhat muffled, as if not much care were taken at the production and mixing stages. And even now I wonder if it would feel different if the sound were brighter, but maybe this is the sound they were going for, one that wasn't too polished, forcing the songs to rely on the compositions themselves. Maybe Arcade Fire are in that sweet spot where they're old enough to know but young enough to not care. They've certainly matured since Funeral, displaying much richer arrangements and tackling heavier themes, but they're still naive enough to sing like affected teenagers in "Black Wave" or say things like "I know a place / where no cars go". | |||
| La música es en ocasiones intensa, en otras rimbombante, de vez en cuando espiritual, pero siempre bella y conmovedora. Podría decir que Funeral tiene un puñado de canciones mejores que cualquier tema en Neon Bible, pero también tiene valles más profundos. Bible es mucho más consistente, en la calidad de sus canciones, en las temáticas y en cómo está hilado. Supongo que podría escribir un párrafo de cada canción, desmenuzándolas en busca de todos los detallitos musicales y letrísticos, pero no podría hacerles justicia. De nuevo, su poder radica en las emociones que despiertan. El mejor ejemplo de todo lo anterior puede encontrarse, creo yo, en el suite compuesto por "Black Wave/Bad Vibrations", lo que parecen ser dos temas colocados como una sola pista en el CD; debido a que me gusta tanto cómo se funden con "Ocean of Noise"--son fácilmente las tres canciones que más he escuchado en lo que va del año--he hecho un solo archivo con los tres temas para este blog. | The music is at times intense, sometimes bombastic, occasionally spiritual, but always beautiful and moving. I supppose Funeral may have a handful of tracks that could be considered better than any song on Neon Bible, but it also has greater valleys. Bible is much more consistent, in the quality of the songs, in its themes and in how it's strung together. I suppose I could go on writing a paragraph for each song, pulling them apart in search of all their musical and lyrical nuances, but I wouldn't be able to do them justice. Again, their biggest strength lies in the emotions their music ignites. The best example of all of the above can be found, I believe, in the suite composed by "Black Wave/Bad Vibrations", what would seem to be two songs placed into one track on the record; because I like how they flow into "Ocean of Noise" so much--they are easily the three songs I've listened to the most this year--I've made a single track with all three songs for the purposes of this blog. | |||
| El precio promedio de este CD en España es de alrededor de 18 euros, así que no tuve que pensármelo mucho para comprarme el disco en iTunes por 10 dólares. Después de escucharlo tanto, terminé gastándome alrededor de 25 euros por la "edición especial", que incluye una biblia de neón animada en la carátula y un par de flipbooks (libritos que al pasar las páginas rápidamente muestran animaciones; ¿cómo se llaman en español?) También me gustó el detalle de que la tipografía y la maquetación usada para las letras de las canciones es similar al de la mayoría de las biblias. | The average price of the CD in Spain is around 18 euros, so buying it in iTunes for 10 bucks was a no-brainer. After listening to it so much, I ended up shelling out close to 25 euros for the "special edition", which includes an animated neon bible on the front and a couple of flipbooks inside. I also liked the fact that the type and presentation they used for the lyrics is the same as used in most bibles. | |||
| Hace algunos años leí un artículo sobre Radiohead en el que decían que eran "raros, arrogantes, sinceros, y creaban belleza--como todas las grandes bandas de rock deben ser". No sé mucho acerca de la arrogancia de Arcade Fire, pero si reemplazamos ese adjetivo con el no-muy-disímil ambiciosos, ciertamente son una gran banda. | A few years back I read an article on Radiohead that said they were "weird, arrogant, earnest, and beautiful--what all great rock bands should be". I don't know much about Arcade Fire's arrogance, but if we replace that item in the list with the not-too-dissimilar ambitious, they certainly fit the description of a geat band. | |||
