A few forgotten James B-sides
Hace unos días me encontraba, como por séptima vez en mi vida, preparando una "antología subjetiva" de James para una nueva amiga que no los había escuchado antes e irá al Summercase este año, de cuyo cartel forman parte. Al estar repasando las canciones en el iTunes para elegir las que al final compondrían dos CDs, volví a escuchar muchos temas que hacía tiempo no había oído y había olvidado cuánto me gustaban, y nuevamente me encontraba asombrado con la cantidad de "lados B" que tenían que me parecían tan buenos o mejores que los "lados A" de ellos mismos (o de cualquier otro artista, para el caso) y que casi nadie--exceptuando sus fans de hueso colorado, como un servidor--había escuchado. Decidí colocar cinco de esas canciones, todas ellas de la época de Millionaires (1999), en mi "jukebox", y de paso colocar un enlace directo a las canciones aquí. Supongo que es buen momento para aprovechar y mencionar que el mes pasado salió un recopilatorio de todos los sencillos de James, 31 en total, más 2 canciones nuevas, una de las cuales ("Who Are You") también he metido al jukebox y aquí abajo, y se supone que más adelante saldrá un disco de material completamente nuevo. He perdido la esperanza de que les llegue el éxito mundial que se merecen--yo estaba *segurísimo* cuando salió Millionaires que, pues eso, se harían millonarios, y el disco pasó completamente desapercibido--pero por otro lado, han fracasado estripitosamente y renacido con relativo éxito varias veces ya, así que sólo podemos esperar y ver qué pasa. Algunos lados-B de Millionaires: I Defeat (con Sinéad O'Connor) Stolen Horse All Good Boys Downstairs Wisdom of the Throat Y una canción nueva: Who Are You | A few days ago I found myself, like for the seventh time in my life, putting together a "subjective anthology" of James songs for a new friend who'd never heard them before and is going to the Summercase festival this year, whose lineup they're a part of. As I was going over the songs in iTunes to choose the ones that in the end would make up two CDs, there were many I hadn't listened to in a long time and had forgotten how much I'd liked, and once again was amazed by the number of "B sides" they had that I thougt were better than many of the "A sides" released by themselves (or any other artist, for that matter) and that nobody--with the exception of their die-hard fans, like yours truly--had ever listened to. I decided to place five of those songs, all of them from the Millionaires era (1999), in my "jukebox", and while I was at it, put direct links to the songs here. I suppose it's a good enough time to mention that last month saw the release of a compilation of all of James' singles, 31 in total, plus 2 new songs, one of which ("Who Are You") I've also thrown in the jukebox and below these lines, and that they're supposed to be coming out with some new stuff later this year. I've lost all hope that they'll ever get the world fame they deserve--I was *certain* that when Millionaires came out they would, well, become millionaires, but the album wasn't even a blip on anyone's radar--but on the other hand, they've failed miserably and and risen from their ashes with relative success in the past, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Siempre me ha gustado James, y como dices generalmente la mezcla de ritmos y letras que encuentras en los lados b poseen ese sabor non-profit que salpica generalmente a los lados A.
Me quedo con "All good boys", "Downstairs" y "Wisdom of the throat".
