Lexical elections
Una rosa podrá oler igual de bien con cualquier otro nombre, pero cuando las palabras ya han sido asignadas, sí es importante elegir la correcta para expresar lo que deseas. Desde hace tiempo, me ha hecho ruido llamar las notas en las que hablo de discos nuevos "CD Reviews" porque 1) La mayoría de mis adquisiciones han dejado de ser CDs físicos para dar lugar a descargas digitales (legales), y 2) un "review", de acuerdo al diccionario de Oxford que ya viene instalado en mi Mac, es "una evaluación o examinación formal de algo con la posibilidad o la intención de instituír cambio si es necesario". Así, dado que no puedo "instituír cambio" en un disco físico que ni siquiera poseo, cambiaré los artículos de tipo "CD Review" a "Album Commentary", que me parece mucho más apropiado. Consideré "Album Critique"--soy bueno para criticar, pero un "critque" tiene una faceta formal que no pretendo adjudicarme--y "Album Appraisal", porque hablo casi exclusivamente acerca de discos que me gustan, pero de nuevo, un "appraisal" implica una valorización, y no es lo que estoy haciendo. Como un "commentary" es "la expresión de opiniones", ¡este blog ahora subirá un punto en la escala de congruencia! | A rose may smell as sweet by any other name, but when words have already been locked in place, it is important to choose the right ones to express what you mean. For a while now, I've had issues with entitling the posts in which I talk about new releases "CD Reviews" because 1) For the most part, I've stopped acquiring actual physical CDs in favor of (legal) digital downloads, and 2) a "review", according to the Oxford dictionary installed on my Mac, is "a formal assessment or examination of something with the possibility or intention of instituting change if necessary". So, given I can't "institute change" on a physical disc I didn't even possess in the first place, I'm changing the "CD Review" articles to "Album Commentary" ones, which I believe is much more appropriate. I considered "Album Critique"--I'm very good at criticizing, but a "critque" has formal aspect to it that I'm not up to-- and "Album Appraisal", because I mostly talk about albums I like, but again, an "appraisal" implies an assessment of value, and that's not what I'm doing. Because a commentary is "the expression of opinions", this blog should now go up a notch on the congruency meter! |
